Liver Status Assessment by Spectrally and Time Resolved IR Detection of Drug Induced Breath Gas Changes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The actual metabolic capacity of the liver is crucial for disease identification, liver therapy, and liver tumor resection. By combining induced drug metabolism and high sensitivity IR spectroscopy of exhaled air, we provide a method for quantitative liver assessment at bedside within 20 to 60 min. Fast administration of 13C-labelled methacetin induces a fast response of liver metabolism and is tracked in real-time by the increase of CO2 in exhaled air. The CO2 concentration increase in exhaled air allows the determination of the metabolic liver capacity (LiMAx-test). Fluctuations in CO2 concentration, pressure and temperature are minimized by special gas handling, and tracking of several spectrally resolved CO2 absorption bands with a quantum cascade laser. Absorption measurement of different CO2 and CO2 rotation-vibration transitions in the same time window allows for multiple referencing and reduction of systematic errors. This FLIP (Fast liver investigation package) setup is being successfully used to plan operations and determine the liver status of patients.

DETECTION AND MEASUREMENT OF ACETONE IN THE BREATH OF DIABETICS BY ION MOBILITY SPECTROMETRY METHOD
Background: The ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is an analytical technique that is widely used due to its high sensitivity and speed for the detection of ionized molecules in gas phase and under atmospheric pressure. Breath analysis is a new method for obtaining information about person's clinical conditions that is considered by researchers. Human exhaled air contains a variety of components s...
متن کاملRenoprotective effect of crocin following liver ischemia/ reperfusion injury in Wistar rats
Objective(s): The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the effects of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury on the activity of antioxidant enzymes, biochemical factors, and histopathological changes in rat kidney, and to investigate the effect of crocin on IR-related changes. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups (n=8). The...
متن کاملGallic acid protects the liver in rats against injuries induced by transient ischemia-reperfusion through regulating microRNAs expressions
Objective(s): Gallic acid (GA) is a highly effective antioxidant, which its beneficial effects are well known, but its impact on expression of microRNAs (miRs) following hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is not well recognized. Therefore, the current research was designed to specify the beneficial effect of GA on miRs (122 and 34a), liver functional tests, and histopathological alterations bey...
متن کاملAssessment of insulin resistance by a 13C glucose breath test: a new tool for early diagnosis and follow-up of high-risk patients
BACKGROUND/AIMS Insulin resistance (IR) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Current methods for insulin resistance detection are cumbersome, or not sensitive enough for early detection and follow-up. The BreathID system can continuously analyse breath samples in real-time at the point-of-care. Here we determined the efficacy of ...
متن کاملStudies of photo-induced protein reactions by spectrally silent reaction dynamics detection methods: applications to the photoreaction of the LOV2 domain of phototropin from Arabidopsis thaliana.
Biological function involves a series of chemical reactions of biological molecules, and during these reactions, there are numerous spectrally silent dynamic events that cannot be monitored by absorption or emission spectroscopic techniques. Such spectrally silent dynamics include changes in conformation, intermolecular interactions (hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions), inter-protein in...
